About Anping (Taiwan)
The old harbour of Tainan, which is the oldest city in Taiwan and was its capital for more than two centuries. The Dutch East India Company landed here in 1624 and built the fort that the town grew around; what followed — Chinese, Qing, Japanese — was all built on top of it, and Anping is where the layers are easiest to see.

Anping Old Fort
Begun by the Dutch East India Company in 1624 as Fort Zeelandia, and the reason there is a city here. What stands is mostly later, but a stretch of the original brick wall survives with banyan roots through it.
The Anping tree house
A nineteenth-century warehouse that was left empty and has been taken over completely by banyan — roots down the walls, branches where the roof was. Walkways have been put through it so it can be seen from inside without disturbing the tree.
Tainan
Twenty minutes inland, and the reason to come this way. The old capital keeps more temples than anywhere else in Taiwan, and it is the city Taiwanese people name when asked where to eat.
