About Atami

A hot-spring town built up the sides of a bay that the mountains close on three sides. The shape is the point. Atami has been firing fireworks over that water since 1952, more than ten times a year rather than once a summer, and the town says the enclosed bay throws the sound back like a stadium. Everything else here is a short climb: the shrine above the town, the plum garden, the museum on the ridge.

The Atami sea fireworks

Fired from barges in the bay itself, with the town rising behind in a half-circle. They have been held since 1952 and are put on through the year rather than only in summer, which is unusual in Japan. The dates are published each year and move.

Kinomiya Shrine and its camphor

Above the town, round a camphor tree said to be more than two thousand years old. It is a national natural monument, and an Environment Ministry survey in 2002 put it second among the giant trees of Japan at roughly twenty-four metres round the trunk. One circuit of it is held to be worth a year of life.

Shore excursions

NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
