About Beppu
A town built on the fact that the ground here is hot. Steam comes up through the roofs of whole districts, and the eight separate hot-spring areas that make up Beppu grew as independent bathing towns, the oldest of them recorded from the early eighth century. The steam and the townscape it rises through were selected as an Important Cultural Landscape in 2012 — the whole working town, not a monument in it.

The Hells
Seven springs in the Kannawa and Kamegawa districts where the water comes up too hot to bathe in and is looked at instead: a cobalt pond, a red one, one that spouts on a cycle. Four of the seven are nationally designated places of scenic beauty.

Steam-cooking at Kannawa
The city runs a kitchen where you buy ingredients and cook them in the ground steam yourself, which is what the district has done domestically for centuries. Twenty minutes and you eat what comes out.

There is a lookout on the hill behind Kannawa built for one purpose: to watch the steam rise out of the roofs. Best in the cold and best at dusk, when the lights come on under it.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
