About Busan (South Korea)
South Korea's second city and its largest port, about 200 kilometres across the strait from Kyushu. It grew fast during and after the Korean War, when refugees settled the hillsides, and it still runs up the slopes to the sea in a way flatter cities do not. The fish market on the waterfront is the largest in the country.
Within reach of the port
Gamcheon Culture Village
A hillside of small painted houses stacked in terraces, settled by refugees during the Korean War. An art project from 2009 onwards brought students, artists and residents together to work on it; there is a stamp map from the information centre and a small museum at the entrance.
Jagalchi Market
The fish market at the harbour, in two parts — an open traditional market and a covered modern one. You choose the fish downstairs and it is prepared upstairs, which is the arrangement the city recommends.
Haeundae
The beach on the east side of the city, with a coastal path round the headland at Dongbaek and the walk up to Dalmaji hill above it. The towers behind it are new; the walk is not.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
