About Fushiki
The port of Takaoka, at the mouth of the Shogawa on a bay that has mountains standing behind it — the Tateyama range rises to three thousand metres a short distance inland, and on a clear winter morning it appears to come straight out of the sea. Takaoka itself was founded by Maeda Toshinaga in 1609 and has cast metal ever since; the temple raised over his grave is a National Treasure.

Zuiryu-ji
A Zen temple of the early Edo period, built by his successor as the mortuary temple of Maeda Toshinaga. The Buddha hall, the lecture hall and the gate were raised to National Treasure in December 1997 — three buildings, laid out symmetrically, and almost nothing added since.

Amaharashi
A stretch of coast north of the port where the Tateyama range stands across the bay behind a rock in the water. It is the view Toyama is known for, and it needs a clear cold morning — in summer the mountains are usually hidden.

The metal town
Takaoka has cast copper and bronze for four hundred years and still casts bells and statues for temples across the country. The old foundry quarter at Kanaya has stone-paved lanes and workshops that take visitors.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
