About Gamagori
A hot-spring and fishing town on Mikawa Bay with a small island four hundred metres offshore, joined to the shore by a bridge you walk across. The island is a designated natural monument in its own right — the forest on it is subtropical in a way the mainland opposite is not — and it takes about half an hour to walk round.
Within reach of the port
Takeshima
Six hundred and eighty metres around and about 19,000 square metres, reached by a 400-metre bridge. The whole island is a national natural monument, because its vegetation belongs further south than this and nobody is sure why.
Yaotomi Shrine
In the middle of the island, and one of the seven shrines in Japan to Benzaiten. Its fortune slips famously include a grade above the top one, which tells you something about the place.
The bay
Mikawa Bay is shallow and warm and full of small boats. The town behind the beach is a hot-spring resort, and the seafood is what a bay like this produces — clams, small fish, and everything eaten close to where it was landed.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
