About Guam

The largest island in Micronesia and inhabited by the Chamorro for some three and a half thousand years — the latte stones scattered around the island are the pillars their houses stood on. Spain claimed it in the sixteenth century and held it for over three hundred years, the United States took it in 1898, Japan occupied it from 1941 to 1944, and all four layers are still legible. Ships berth at Apra Harbour on the west coast.

Tumon Bay

The hotel strip now, and a major settlement long before that — the freshwater springs and the fishing inside the reef made it one of the most populated parts of the island, and latte stones and other finds around the bay show it.

Puntan Dos Amantes

Two Lovers Point, a cliff some 370 feet above the north end of Tumon Bay. The story attached to it — a Chamorro woman and her lover tying their hair together and going over the edge rather than be parted — was written down by the French explorer Freycinet as early as 1819.

The war in the Pacific

The United States National Park Service keeps seven sites around the island from the 1944 landings and the occupation before them, with a visitor centre at Asan. It is a park about a battle rather than a monument to one.

Shore excursions

NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
