About Hofu
The old provincial capital of Suo, which is why a town this size has the administrative buildings and the shrine of somewhere much larger. The Mori, who ruled western Honshu and then led the overthrow of the shogunate, built their family seat here in 1916, and the garden around it runs to five and a half hectares.

Hofu Tenmangu
Dedicated to Sugawara no Michizane, the scholar exiled to Kyushu and afterwards worshipped as the god of learning. The shrine records give its founding as 904, the year after he died, which would make it the first of the Tenmangu shrines.

The Mori residence and garden
Completed in 1916 in the manner of a daimyo house — sixty rooms, seven hundred and eighty mats — and designated an Important Cultural Property in 2011. The garden around it is a nationally designated place of scenic beauty, and the house is now a museum of some twenty thousand pieces the family kept.

The provincial remains
Suo was administered from here for centuries and the ground still shows it — the site of the provincial office, the provincial temple, and a stone-paved approach the city has excavated and marked.

Shore excursions
