About Ishinomaki
A river-mouth port that was the shipping point for Sendai rice down to Edo, and one of the largest fishing towns on this coast. It lost more people than anywhere else in the tsunami of March 2011 and has spent the years since rebuilding, including a museum on the waterfront about what happened. The islands offshore and the peninsula east of the town are what a call here is for.
Within reach of the port
Tashirojima
An hour by ferry, and known for the cats — brought in to protect silkworms from mice, never removed, and now outnumbering the people who live there. The island has two small villages and no shops to speak of.

Kitakami and the memorial
The mouth of the river east of the town, where the Okawa school stands as it was left and is open to visitors, and a national memorial park was completed in 2021. It is a difficult visit and it is the honest one.

The manga museum
A round building on an island in the river, dedicated to Ishinomori Shotaro, who created Kamen Rider and Cyborg 009. It was flooded to the first floor in 2011, and reopened in 2012.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
