About Ito
The first Western-rigged ship built in Japan was built here, on the beach, by an English pilot who had been shipwrecked and then kept. William Adams took the name Miura Anjin, became adviser to Tokugawa Ieyasu, and never went home. Ito has held a festival in his name every August since, and the fireworks on its last night are fired the length of the shore.

The Anjin Festival
Three days in August for William Adams, the English pilot who built two Western-style ships for Ieyasu on this beach at the start of the seventeenth century. It closes with fireworks fired from along the whole Ito shore, which is as much of the town as any one view holds.

Tokaikan
A wooden hot-spring inn on the river through the middle of town, built when that kind of carpentry was still ordinary and kept afterwards because it no longer was. It is open to walk through, and it holds the display on Adams and his ships.

Omuroyama
A grass-covered cinder cone standing alone behind the town, a national natural monument, with a lift to the rim and a path round it. The lava that built the cliffs down the coast at Jogasaki came out of it.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
