About Jeju Island
A volcanic island built around a single shield volcano, and geologically young enough that the lava tubes under it are still intact. Three of its sites were inscribed by UNESCO in 2007 as Jeju Volcanic Island and Lava Tubes, the only natural World Heritage site in South Korea. The island has its own language, its own stone grandfather statues and a tradition of women who dive for shellfish without air, as at Toba.
Within reach of the port
Seongsan Ilchulbong
A tuff cone that erupted underwater and now stands out of the sea at the eastern end of the island, its crater open at the top. One of the three inscribed components, and it is climbed from the landward side in about half an hour.
The Geomunoreum lava tubes
UNESCO calls this the finest lava tube system of caves anywhere, for the multicoloured carbonate on its roofs and floors over dark lava walls. Access is restricted to protect it; part of the system can be visited.
Hallasan
The volcano itself, 1,950 metres and the highest mountain in South Korea, with a crater lake at the top. The third inscribed component, and the whole island is built out of it.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
