About Kaohsiung (Taiwan)

The deep-water port of Taiwan and its second city, built round a long lagoon harbour with the town on one side and Cijin island shielding it from the strait. The old wharves nearest the water have been given over to galleries and a concert hall, so the first thing off the ship is not an industrial estate. What most visitors go inland for is a lake in the northern suburbs with temples standing in it.

Within reach of the port

The Dragon and Tiger Pagodas at Lotus Pond

Two seven-storey towers on the water at Zuoying, entered through the mouth of a dragon and left through the mouth of a tiger, which is held to turn bad luck into good. They were shut for restoration from 2023 and reopened in 2025. About ten kilometres from the berth.

The harbour front

The warehouses at Pier-2 are now studios and galleries, and the Kaohsiung Music Center stands on the water beside them in a row of white shells. Both are walkable from the cruise terminal, which is not true of much else.

Shore excursions

NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
