About Keelung (Taiwan)
The main port of northern Taiwan, built into a narrow inlet with the town climbing the hills on both sides of it. It is the way most ships reach Taipei, which is close enough to be a day, but the harbour itself has more in it than a transfer suggests — the Japanese built the fishing port here in the 1930s, and the headland beyond it is cut into shapes by the sea.
Within reach of the port
Heping Island Park
On the headland at the harbour mouth, where the sandstone has been eroded into mushroom stacks and honeycombed platforms. A walkway runs out over the rock, and there is a tidal pool cut into it.
Zhengbin fishing harbour
Built in the 1930s, when this was the largest fishing port in Taiwan. The row of houses along the quay has been painted in blocks of colour by the city, which is why a working harbour is full of people photographing it.
Miaokou night market
The street market around the Dianji temple, a few minutes from the berth and lit by rows of yellow lanterns. It is the thing Keelung is known for in Taiwan, and it is food rather than souvenirs.
Shore excursions
