About Komatsushima (Tokushima)

The port for Tokushima, on a coast where the tide does something visible. Where the Inland Sea meets the Pacific at the Naruto strait the water levels on either side differ enough that the current runs at speed through a narrow gap, and turns. The prefecture is also where Awa Odori comes from, and where indigo was grown and dyed for the rest of Japan.

The Naruto whirlpools

Among the largest tidal whirlpools anywhere. They run strongest at spring tides around the equinoxes, and are worth checking against a tide table before planning the day — at slack water there is nothing to see. Boats go out to them and a walkway runs under the bridge above them.

Awa Odori

The dance that fills Tokushima city every August, and a hall in the city that performs it year-round with an invitation to join in badly. It is the least reserved thing in Japanese folk performance.

Indigo

Awa indigo dyed the country before synthetic dye arrived, and the workshops that survived still dye by fermenting the leaves in vats. Several take visitors and let you dye a cloth.

Shore excursions

NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
