About Matsuyama
The largest city on Shikoku, built around a castle on a hill in the middle of it and a bathhouse that has been in use far longer than the castle. Ships berth at Matsuyama Kanko Port, west of the centre and about twenty minutes from either. The two things worth the day are ten minutes apart by tram.
Within reach of the port
Matsuyama Castle
On a hill of 132 metres in the middle of the city, with a keep that has never been rebuilt. Matsuyama City lists it as one of the twelve castles in Japan still standing with their original keep, and this one was finished the year after Perry's ships arrived — the last complete castle architecture of the Edo period.

Dogo Onsen Honkan
The wooden bathhouse of 1894 at the centre of Dogo, said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan. In December 1994 it became the first public bathhouse designated an Important Cultural Property, and it is still a bathhouse — you pay at the door and go in.
The tram
Matsuyama still runs street trams, including a steam-outline train that loops the castle. It is the simplest way between the port, the castle and Dogo, and it is worth the ride on its own.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
