About Moji
The Kyushu side of the strait that separates it from Honshu, where the water narrows to about seven hundred metres and the current runs hard. Moji was opened as a trading port in 1889 and grew rich on coal and on being the place everything had to pass; the brick and stone buildings from that period stand together on the waterfront, which is what the district is now known for.

Mojiko Retro
The old customs house of 1912, the Mitsui club, the Osaka Shosen building and the 1914 station, within a few minutes of each other on the quay. The customs house has a viewing room on the top floor looking over the strait and the ships going through it.

The strait itself
Ships pass close enough to read their names. A pedestrian tunnel runs under the water to Shimonoseki on the Honshu side — it takes about fifteen minutes to walk, and there is a line on the floor at the prefectural border.

Yaki-curry
Curry baked in a dish under cheese and egg. It was invented in Moji and there are dozens of places along the waterfront doing their own version, which is the sort of thing a port town produces.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
