About Muroran
A steel and port town on a peninsula that curls back on itself, which gives it a sheltered inner harbour and a wild outer coast within a few kilometres of each other. The cliffs on the seaward side drop a hundred metres straight into the Pacific; the inner side is a working waterfront with a suspension bridge over it, and the town has made a feature of what its own factories look like after dark.

Chikyu Misaki
Literally "cape of the earth" — a lookout on a cliff where the horizon is far enough round that the curve is the whole point of the name. Whales and dolphins pass below it in summer.

The Hakucho Bridge
The longest suspension bridge in northern Japan, lit from dusk until midnight every night. There is a viewing platform at each end, and the one nearest the bridge puts the lights at eye level.

The works at night
Muroran is one of the towns that treats its own industry as a view. The refineries and the steelworks are lit through the night and the city publishes where to stand; it is an odd thing to be sold and it works.

Shore excursions
