About Naha
The capital of Okinawa, and before that of the Ryukyu Kingdom, which traded with China, Korea and south-east Asia for four centuries as a state in its own right. That history is the reason the architecture, the language, the music and the food are not those of the rest of Japan. Nine Ryukyu sites were inscribed by UNESCO in December 2000, and several are within the city.

Shurijo
The royal castle, first built at the end of the fourteenth century, in a style that is neither Chinese nor Japanese but takes from both. The main hall burned in 2019 and is being rebuilt; the walls, the gates and the site itself are the World Heritage listing and are open while the work goes on.
Kokusai-dori
A mile and a half of shops through the middle of the city, and the covered markets in the lanes behind it, where the fish is a colour you will not see on the mainland.

Tamaudun and Shikinaen
The royal mausoleum, cut into rock beside the castle, and the kings' second residence with its garden. Both are on the same World Heritage inscription as Shurijo and both are quieter.

Shore excursions
