About Ofunato
A deep inlet on the Sanriku coast, which is a ria coast — drowned valleys, so the water comes far inland and the hills come down to it. The town was destroyed by the tsunami of March 2011 and rebuilt; the national park the coast belongs to was created in 2013 as part of that recovery, and says so in its name.

Goishi Coast
Six kilometres of headland east of the town — sea caves, a natural rock arch, and a beach of dark round stones that gave the coast its name. Nationally designated as both a place of scenic beauty and a natural monument, and there is a walking path the length of it.

Sanriku Fukko National Park
Created in May 2013 to contribute to the recovery of the coast after the earthquake — the only national park in Japan founded for that reason. The information centre at Goishi explains the geology and the long-distance trail that runs through.

The bay from a boat
Sightseeing boats and fishing boats both take passengers out. Scallop and oyster rafts fill the inlet, and seeing the coast from the water is how the shape of a ria coast becomes obvious.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
