About the Oki Islands
Not a port. A day among four inhabited islands and a scatter of smaller ones, sixty kilometres off the coast of Shimane. Oki is a UNESCO Global Geopark, and the cliffs are why: the islands are the remains of a volcano that the sea has been cutting into ever since. Two emperors were exiled here, which tells you how far away it was considered to be.
What you see from the deck
The Kuniga coast
On Nishinoshima, a run of cliffs ending at Matengai, which rises some two hundred and fifty metres sheer out of the water. Cattle and horses graze loose on the grass at the top of it.
Why anyone was sent here
Go-Toba was exiled to Oki in 1221 after failing to take power back from the shogunate, and died on the islands. Go-Daigo was sent in 1332 and got away again. Both stories are still told on the islands that held them.
