About Onomichi-Itozaki
A port on the narrow channel between the mainland and Mukaishima, where the water is close enough that the town runs up the hillside instead of along the shore. Temples are stacked on the slope above the station, reached by lanes and stairs, and the islands begin immediately offshore. The bridge road out to them is the reason a lot of people come.

Senkoji and the hill
A temple of 806 partway up the slope, with the town, the channel and the islands laid out below it. A ropeway runs to the park at the top, 144 metres up, and the walk back down through the temple lanes is the point.

The Shimanami Kaido
A road that crosses six islands to Shikoku on a chain of suspension bridges, and the first in Japan built with a cycle path the whole way over the water. Bicycles are rented at the Onomichi end and returned on the islands.

Innoshima
The second island out, under the bridge ASUKA III passes on the way in. It was the base of the Murakami, the seafaring families who controlled these straits in the medieval period, and there is a castle museum on the hill about them.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
