About Palau
An archipelago of several hundred islands, most of them uninhabited limestone mounds standing in a lagoon the colour of nothing else. The Rock Islands Southern Lagoon was inscribed by UNESCO in 2012. Palau was administered by Japan between the wars, which is why Japanese words survive in the language, and it is a short call on a long Pacific crossing.

The Rock Islands
Several hundred forested limestone islands in a shallow lagoon, undercut at the waterline so they appear to float. Inscribed by UNESCO in 2012, and seen from the water rather than walked on.
The marine lakes
Saltwater lakes trapped inside the islands, cut off from the sea long enough for what lives in them to go its own way. The best known holds jellyfish that have lost most of their sting.
Koror
The main town and where the ship ties up. The national museum is here, and so is the aquarium, which is about the reef immediately outside rather than about fish in general.
Shore excursions
