About Penghu (Taiwan)
Ninety-odd islands of columnar basalt sitting in the middle of the strait, flat, treeless and windy, with Magong the only town of any size. Taiwan was administered from here before it was administered from Taiwan: the oldest Mazu temple on Taiwanese soil stands a few streets back from the Magong waterfront, and it has been there since 1604.
Within reach of the port
Penghu Tianhou Temple
The oldest temple to Mazu, the sea goddess, anywhere under Taiwan, built in 1604 and a national monument. It is in the middle of Magong, a short walk from the harbour, and the lanes around it are the oldest street in the islands.

The stone weirs
Fish traps built out of basalt and coral in the shallows, so that the tide carries fish in and strands them. Hundreds were built across the islands. The best known is a double heart shape off Qimei, which is a separate island well to the south and not something to attempt in a day from Magong.

The basalt
The islands are lava, and where the sea has cut into them it leaves walls of hexagonal columns. Penghu County runs a geology centre in Magong that sets out where to look.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
