About Rishiri
An island that is one mountain. Rishiri-zan rises 1,721 metres straight out of the water and the settlements sit in a ring around its base, so the peak is above you wherever you stand. It is the northern end of Rishiri-Rebun-Sarobetsu National Park, and the kelp harvested off these shores is graded the highest in Japan and goes into the broth of restaurants that will not use any other.

The mountain
Called Rishiri Fuji for the shape, and climbed from Oshidomari in a long day by people who start before dawn. For a ship call the sensible version is the road around the base, which puts the peak at a different angle every few kilometres.

Himenuma and Otatomari
Two ponds on the lower slopes that hold the reflection of the mountain when the air is still. The view from Otatomari was on the packaging of a well-known confectionery for years, which is how most Japanese visitors know it before they arrive.

The kelp
Rishiri kombu is dried on the stony shore in summer, laid out in rows you will pass on the road. It is the base of the clear broth in Kyoto cooking, which is a long way for seaweed to travel and be specified by name.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
