About Saipan
A long, narrow island with a reef-enclosed lagoon down its western side and cliffs on the east. Chamorro and Carolinian people live here, Spain and then Germany and then Japan administered it in turn, and the fighting of 1944 left marks that are still the reason many Japanese visitors come. The lagoon is the reason everyone else does.
Within reach of the port
Managaha
A sand cay in the lagoon, small enough to walk around in twenty minutes, and a designated no-take marine protected area — so the reef around it is what a reef is supposed to look like. It is also the burial place of Chief Aghurubw, which matters to the Carolinian community.
The north of the island
Banzai Cliff and Suicide Cliff, where the fighting of July 1944 ended, and the memorials that stand at both. Japanese, American and Korean monuments are within a few hundred metres of each other.
The lagoon
Shallow, sheltered and clear, running most of the length of the west coast. Everything on the water happens inside it — the reef takes the swell, so the conditions are the same most days.
Shore excursions
