About Sakai-Minato
One of the busiest fishing ports on the Sea of Japan coast, on a narrow spit of land with the lake on one side and the sea on the other. Mount Daisen stands behind it, and on the far shore is Matsue with its castle. The town itself is known for the eight hundred metres of street between the station and the museum of the cartoonist who was raised here.

Mizuki Shigeru Road
Eight hundred metres of street with 178 bronze yokai along it — the spirits and monsters of Japanese folklore as Mizuki Shigeru drew them. Laid out in 1993 and rebuilt in 2018. It sounds slight and is not: it is the reason the town has visitors at all.

The fish market
Crab, tuna and squid landed on the quay you are standing on. Tottori lands more snow crab than anywhere in Japan, and the season runs from November.

Matsue and Daisen
Matsue is forty minutes round the lake and has one of the twelve castles still standing with its original keep. Mount Daisen, an hour the other way, is the highest thing in the region and the reason the weather here changes so fast.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
