About Sendai
The city Date Masamune laid out in 1600 and the largest in the north-east, set back from the sea on a plain with the mountains behind it. Ships berth at Sendai Shiogama Port, and the two things a call is usually spent on are in opposite directions: the Date sites in the city, and the bay of pine islands twenty minutes up the coast.

Zuihoden
The mausoleum built for Date Masamune in 1637, in the ornate style of the Momoyama period. It was designated a National Treasure in 1931 and destroyed by bombing in 1945; what stands now was rebuilt in 1979 to the original drawings, on the same hill above the river.
Matsushima
A bay of small pine-covered islands, counted since the seventeenth century as one of the three views of Japan. Half an hour by train, and the way to see it is from a boat among the islands rather than from the shore.
The castle site
Nothing of the keep survives, but the terrace it stood on looks straight down the length of the city, and the equestrian statue of Masamune is up there. A loop bus links it with Zuihoden and the museum.

Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
