About the Shimokita Peninsula
Not a port. The ship runs the west side of Shimokita, which is the blade of the axe: a wall of weathered white rock standing out of the water for a couple of kilometres, with the Tsugaru Strait beyond it. Inland, out of sight from the deck, is Osorezan, one of the three mountains in Japan where the dead are said to gather.
What you see from the deck
Hotokegaura
Two kilometres of pale green tuff eroded into towers and blades, named for the Buddhas people saw in the shapes. It is a national place of scenic beauty and a natural monument, and reaching it by land means a long road down the peninsula.
