About the Shiretoko
Not a port. An hour or so run along a coast that has no road on it. Shiretoko is a spine of volcanoes dropping straight into the sea, with the Sea of Okhotsk on one side, and the far half of it can only be reached by boat or on foot. It is a World Heritage site, listed for the link between the drift ice that arrives each winter and everything that lives off it. Nothing to book: the point of the hour is the deck.
What you see from the deck
The cliff coast
Walls of rock several hundred metres high with waterfalls coming straight off them into the sea, and no way along the shore at the foot. What makes the stretch worth standing out for is that there is no other way to look at it.
What lives there
Brown bears come down to the shore, and sea eagles winter on the coast. Both are the reason the peninsula was listed rather than simply protected: the drift ice feeds the sea, the sea feeds the land, and the chain is still intact here in a way it is not further south.
