About Shodoshima
The second-largest island in the Inland Sea, and the place olives were first grown successfully in Japan, in 1908. It is mountainous for its size, terraced with soy and sesame works that have been there for centuries, and quiet in a way the mainland ports are not. A call here is a day of small distances.
Within reach of the port
Angel Road
A sandbar between the island and three offshore islets that the tide uncovers twice a day and covers again. You can walk across it at low water and not at high; the tide table is published, and it decides whether the walk happens.

Kankakei
A gorge cut into the volcanic rock in the middle of the island, counted among the three great scenic gorges in Japan. A ropeway climbs 317 metres of it over a run of 917 metres, which is the easy way to the top.

The olive groves
The park above the coast has some two thousand olive trees and a hundred and thirty kinds of herb, looking out over the Inland Sea. Olive oil, olive leaf tea and the rest of it are made on the island.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
