About Tateyama
The warm end of the Boso peninsula, an hour and a half from Tokyo by road and a different climate when you get there — the Kuroshio runs past the headland and keeps the winters mild enough for flowers in January. The Satomi, a warlord family who fought their way through the sixteenth century, held the castle here; a nineteenth-century novel about them ran to a hundred and six volumes and made the place famous.
Within reach of the port
Okinoshima
An island of about a kilometre around at the south end of the bay — until the Kanto earthquake of 1923 lifted the seabed and joined it to the shore, so you now walk out to it. Warm-temperate forest on top, and coral on the north side, growing at about the northern limit for it on this coast.

Tateyama Castle
On the hill above the town, on the Satomi site. The keep is a museum about Nanso Satomi Hakkenden, the enormous serialised novel Kyokutei Bakin built out of the family history, with the prints and printed volumes it was read in.

The bay
Sheltered, shallow and warm, with Mount Fuji across the water on a clear day. Glass-bottomed boats run from the harbour, and the flower fields on the headland are cut from December.
Shore excursions
NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
