About Toba
The town where cultured pearls were invented. Mikimoto Kokichi raised the first one here in 1893, on an islet a few minutes from the pier, and the industry that followed is still the reason the bay is full of rafts. It is also one of the last places where ama, women who dive for shellfish without air, still work. The ship berths in the middle of town; everything below is walkable or one short boat ride.

Mikimoto Pearl Island
The islet where the first cultured pearl was raised in 1893, opened to visitors in 1951. A museum on pearls, another on Mikimoto himself, and ama in the traditional white diving dress demonstrating how it was done before air.
Toba Aquarium
Around 1,200 species, more than any other aquarium in Japan keeps. It is on the waterfront a few minutes from the berth, and the dugong is the one people come for.
The Sea-Folk Museum
Out along the coast, and the serious answer to what the ama actually did. It holds 6,879 pieces of fishing and diving equipment designated as Important Tangible Folk Cultural Property — the largest such collection in the country.

Shore excursions
