About Hosojima
A deep-water harbour on a headland that has been a landfall on this coast since long before it was industrialised, and still the working port for the Hyuga-Nobeoka district. What the call is for is the coast either side of it: five kilometres of ria shoreline at Cape Hyuga, cut into columns of rock by the sea, at the southern end of the Nippo Coast 'uasi-National Park.
Within reach of the port
Umagase
The cliff at the end of the cape, columnar rock rising sheer out of the water. Seen from a boat it reads as a horse's back, which is where the name comes from. There is a walk out to the point and a lookout above the drop.

The Cross Sea
The sea has split the rock here into a cross, roughly 200 metres east to west and 220 north to south. A separate rock outside the cross turns the shape, read together, into the character 叶 — to be granted — and the city says a wish made here is granted. Ten minutes from Umagase.

Takachiho, inland
Two hours up the valley, and the reason many people take this call. The gorge and the cave shrines there are where Japanese myth places the sun goddess hiding herself away — see the Takachiho entries on our Kagoshima and Naze pages for what is at the top of the road.

Shore excursions
