About Shimizu

The port sits at the back of Suruga Bay with Mount Fuji standing behind it, which is the whole reason ships call here. The mountain is 40 kilometres away and rises straight out of the plain, so on a clear morning it is the first thing you see from the deck. Cruise ships berth at Hinode Pier, a working cargo wharf close to the water end of the city, and the pine coast that frames the classic view of the mountain is twenty minutes along the shore.

Within reach of the port

Miho no Matsubara

Seven kilometres of shoreline with some fifty-four thousand black pines along it, and Fuji across the water beyond them. It was inscribed in 2013 as one of the component parts of the World Heritage site Fujisan, on the strength of exactly that view.

The harbour boat

A short cruise runs inside the harbour several times a day and puts both the mountain and the pine bar in the same frame from the water, which is not a view you can get from land.

Sunpu Castle Park

Twenty minutes inland by rail. Tokugawa Ieyasu retired here after handing the shogunate to his son and ran the country from the castle until he died; the moat, the walls and two reconstructed gates stand in the middle of modern Shizuoka.

Shore excursions

NYK Cruises run their own guided excursions at each port, booked by guests themselves through My ASUKA PLANS — the booking window opens before departure and depends on your cabin class. They are conducted in Japanese. Going ashore independently is always an option.
